LLM SEO: Making Sense of Search's Weirdest New Acronym

By Keith Schilling · August 7, 2026 · 5 min read

"LLM SEO" shouldn't really parse — there's no search engine in a language model, and nothing resembling the ranked index SEO was named for. But language finds its own way: the term now covers the practical question thousands of marketing teams are asking, which is *how do we show up when buyers ask ChatGPT instead of Google?* Fighting the vocabulary is a losing trade; understanding what the work involves isn't.

What LLM SEO actually consists of

Strip the acronym and three activities remain. Tracking: measuring how often LLMs mention, recommend, and cite your brand across the questions that matter in your category — the LLM rank tracking discipline. Source optimization: shaping what models read about you — your crawlable pages, your review-site presence, the third-party comparisons engines actually cite. Content design: publishing the plain, fact-dense, liftable answers that generative engines quote, covered in depth in our GEO guide.

Notice what's absent: no keyword densities, no link-velocity folklore. The transferable SEO skills are the unglamorous ones — technical hygiene, structured data, understanding what a crawler can read.

The tracking layer is where to start

Every LLM SEO program should open with measurement, for a blunt reason: intuitions about what models say are almost always wrong in one direction or the other. Teams assume they're invisible and discover a 40% mention rate; teams assume they're covered and discover the engine recommends three rivals by name. When we baselined our own consultancy's category early on, the brand scored a visibility of 2 against competitors sitting between 27 and 32 — a number that reorganized the entire content plan in one meeting.

Good tracking software for this shares a spine: multiple engines reported separately, repeat runs per prompt (single-run data is noise wearing a suit), competitor scoring, stored verbatim answers. That spine is Treyci's whole design; our tool-market comparison covers the alternatives honestly if you're shopping.

A note on expectations

LLM SEO compounds like early SEO did — slowly, then meaningfully — but the mechanism differs: you're not climbing an index, you're becoming part of the consensus a model compresses. Source changes take a re-crawl or a model update to surface. Budget quarters, measure monthly, and be suspicious of anyone selling overnight movement; in this field the fast results are usually the fake ones.

Measure it instead of wondering about it.

Treyci tracks your brand across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok — every prompt run three times, every month, from $99.
