What Is AI Visibility? A Plain-English Guide for Marketers

By Keith Schilling · August 7, 2026 · 6 min read

Ask ChatGPT for the best project management software for a mid-size team and it will name three or four products, say a sentence about each, and stop. That answer — who gets named, who gets praised, whose website gets linked — is AI visibility. Your brand either shows up in it or it doesn't, and no analytics tool you currently own can tell you which.

The term gets thrown around loosely, so here's the working definition we use: AI visibility is the share of relevant AI-generated answers in which your brand appears. "Relevant" is doing real work in that sentence. Nobody cares whether ChatGPT knows your company exists. What matters is whether it brings you up when a buyer asks a question you'd want to win.

The three levels of showing up

Not all appearances are equal, and lumping them together produces numbers that flatter you. We score three distinct levels. Mentioned means your name appears anywhere in the answer, even in passing ("unlike heavier tools such as X"). Recommended means the engine actively suggests you — you're in the shortlist, described favorably. Cited means the engine linked or referenced your website as a source for its answer.

Cited is the level most brands ignore and the one with the longest tail. When Perplexity builds an answer about your category, it pulls from a handful of domains it trusts — review sites, comparison pages, occasionally vendors themselves. Getting your own pages into that trusted set changes your visibility on hundreds of questions at once, not just one.

Why this became a marketing number

Buyers changed their first step. Before they Google you, before they hit your pricing page, a growing slice of them asks an AI assistant to build a shortlist. The AI names two or three brands and the buyer starts there. If you're not in the answer, you didn't lose the deal — you never learned it existed. Your CRM logs nothing. Your web analytics log nothing.

The sales floor sees it before the dashboards do. Ask your reps how often "I asked ChatGPT" now comes up on discovery calls. Then check your referral traffic for chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. The absolute numbers are still small for most B2B brands, but those visitors convert unusually well — the AI already shortlisted you before they clicked.

How AI visibility is actually measured

The honest method is unglamorous: write down the questions your buyers actually ask, put each one to the AI engines your buyers actually use, and score every answer for who was mentioned, recommended, and cited. Then do it again on a schedule, because the answers move.

One wrinkle makes this harder than it sounds: AI answers are not deterministic. Ask the same engine the same question twice and the brand list changes. That's why we run every prompt three separate times per engine and score the aggregate — "recommended in 2 of 3 runs" is a measurement, while a single answer is an anecdote. When we baselined monday.com's category this way, the gap between it and Asana was under four points of visibility score — a difference single-run tools would report as noise, in whichever direction the dice happened to land.

Where to start

You don't need software to get a first read. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity five real buying questions from your category tonight and tally who appears. It takes twenty minutes and most marketing leaders find at least one unpleasant surprise.

When you want the systematic version — a proper prompt set, four engines, repeat runs, month-over-month trend — that's what Treyci measures, starting at $99/month. Either way, measure before you optimize. The teams that skip measurement end up doing AI-visibility work they can't prove and their CFO can't fund.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No. SEO earns positions in a ranked list of links; AI visibility earns a place inside a synthesized answer. They overlap — engines lean on well-structured, crawlable content — but AI engines cite different sources than Google ranks, and being #1 on Google while absent from AI answers is common.

Which AI engines matter for B2B?

ChatGPT for reach, Perplexity for research-heavy buyers, Gemini for its Google surface area, and Grok for real-time takes. They disagree with each other constantly, which is exactly why measuring only one is misleading.

Measure it instead of wondering about it.

Treyci tracks your brand across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok — every prompt run three times, every month, from $99.
