Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): The Practical Introduction

By Keith Schilling · August 7, 2026 · 6 min read

SEO optimizes for a list of links; AEO — answer engine optimization — optimizes for the answer itself. When ChatGPT or Perplexity responds to a buying question with three recommended products and two cited sources, AEO is the work of being one of those products and one of those sources.

The discipline is young enough that half the advice circulating is folklore. What follows is the part we've verified by measuring categories before and after the work.

Where AEO overlaps SEO — and where it forks

The overlap is real: crawlable pages, fast sites, structured data, authoritative content all feed both. If your technical SEO is solid you're not starting from zero. The fork is in *what gets rewarded*. Google rewards pages that satisfy a query; answer engines reward facts and framings they can lift — plain statements, real numbers, direct comparisons — and sources they trust for a topic, which skew heavily toward third-party review and comparison sites rather than vendor domains.

The consequence: a brand can hold position one on Google and be absent from AI answers in the same category. We've measured exactly that shape repeatedly — it's the default state, not the exception, because ranking well and being quotable are different achievements.

The actual work, in priority order

First, access: let AI crawlers reach your money pages (robots.txt blocks on comparison and pricing pages are the most common self-inflicted wound we find), server-render what matters, add Product/FAQ/Organization schema, publish an llms.txt. Second, answerable content: a crawlable page that plainly answers each of the top twenty questions in your category — including the comparisons you're nervous about and the pricing you'd rather gate. Third, the citation layer: current review-site profiles and presence in the listicles engines actually cite in your category — a list you get empirically by measuring who engines cite when asked about your space.

Measuring AEO, or it didn't happen

AEO has a reputation problem inherited from bad SEO: work that can't prove itself. The antidote is a measured baseline before the work starts — mention rate, recommendation rate, citation share, per engine — and the same measurement monthly after. Answer variance means single checks can't carry this; you need repeat-run methodology for the trend to mean anything. That measurement loop is what Treyci exists to provide, and it's also exactly how you'll know which of the folklore tactics deserve your quarter and which don't.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No — buyers still Google, and organic search still carries most B2B discovery volume today. AEO is additive: a second, growing surface where shortlists form. The teams winning treat the disciplines as siblings sharing infrastructure, not rivals competing for budget.

AEO vs GEO — what's the difference?

Mostly vocabulary. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) describe the same discipline; AEO emphasizes the answer surface, GEO the generative models producing it. Pick one term for internal use and don't let the acronym debate consume real work time.
